Child Support non payment?

My sons father is 1,000 plus behind in arrears. We went to court and they set a court day for 3 months from now. Well needless to say he was fired from his job(for stealing I believe). What happens when we go to court? Will the judge allow him more time to find a job and catch up? Will he go to jail?
